Josiah Wedgwood, a dedicated craftsman, potter, pioneer and philanthropist, founded Wedgwood in Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1759. Josiah’s values of design, quality and innovation have been the forefront of Wedgwood’s rich heritage for over 250 years. The legacy of Josiah is celebrated as Wedgwood continues to craft the highest quality fine bone china dinnerware and teaware, re-imagine archive patterns and innovate with new intricate designs to create contemporary collections that will make each day, that little bit more beautiful.
In 1964, Wedgwood Wild Strawberry was born. The quintessentially English collection was inspired by the magic of an English country garden and the popular British tradition of strawberries and cream. Wedgwood Wild Strawberry features strawberries with finely-drawn leaves and hand gilded 22 carat gold accents on the rim of each piece.
Back in 1964, the collection was crafted from fine bone china in the Barlaston factory in Stoke-on-Trent, England by skilled artisans. It still is to this day.
For many pieces of the Wild Strawberry collection, Wedgwood artisans decorate the intricate pattern by hand in a process called lithography. Lithography is a highly skilled craft that can take many years to perfect, of which some artisans in the Barlaston factory have practiced for 40 years.
This romantic pattern has beautifully transcended over the past 50 years and shown its vast potential to be reimagined. From new tableware collections such as Wild Strawberry White – a white embossed collection taking inspiration from the heritage of Wild Strawberry, to a blend of black tea with strawberries, cucumber, mint, strawberry leaves and pink peony flowers. Its English heritage and feminine aesthetic also lead to an exclusive collaborative collection with fashion brand, Topshop. Topshop Unique incorporated the Wild Strawberry pattern into a range of teadresses.
Dik Delaney, Wedgwood’s Design Director, explains why Wild Strawberry is such an iconic part of Wedgwood’s history and what makes the collection so magical: “Wild Strawberry has an enduring elegance about it. Its motif has become iconic and brings to mind a sense of heritage and artisanal craftmanship.
The collection is recognised across the globe due to its intricate illustrative design, functionality and nostalgic feminine aesthetic. Wild Strawberry is also loved for its timeless nature, it has a multitude of styling possibilities and allows its owner to put their own, individual flair into entertaining.
Wedgwood Wild Strawberry makes the smallest of gatherings or formal occasions, extra special.”
